Ukraine War: What are the two likely strategic aims for Ukraine?

Image
Ukraine War: What are the two likely strategic aims for Ukraine? The next few days and weeks in Ukraine are likely to be a picture of confusion with different messaging about who's advancing where. Now, there are two likely strategic aims for Ukraine. Firstly, to reclaim the Donbas. The Russians said that that's what they wanted to take, so obviously the Ukrainians will want to throw the Russians out of the Donbas if they can. But the second aim is really to break the land bridge, this bridge between the Donbas and Crimea. That land bridge is really important to the Russians, but it's pretty important to the Ukrainians, because if they can drive south from Zaporizhia, the area that includes Zaporizhia nuclear power station, to Militopol on the coast, then they'll break that land bridge clean apart. And so that sort of area presents lots of challenges to the Ukrainians,...

Turkey-Syria earthquake: one month on | 5 News Danny, if you also knew that it's one month on from those devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey in Syria, the death toll now stands at over 53,000, and the effects of the disaster are visible across those affected areas in southern Turkey and in northern Syria. As you'd expect, there is a huge fundraising effort to help the millions of people who've been left homeless. Just a few weeks ago, we spoke to Tefel Hussein from Islamic Relief. He's in Turkey now, and today we invited him back on again to get an update, and we started by asking him just what the situation was like on the ground. I mean, the situation is still absolutely desperate. And I was in Gadyinte, I've been in Gadyinte for the last two days, and you don't understand the magnitude of this crisis until you've actually gone on the ground yourself....

Ukraine War: What missiles have Russia fired?

Ukraine War: What missiles have Russia fired? I mean, he caveated his remarks so that he wasn't departing from the official government line, which is that Ukraine makes the calls here when Ukraine's ready, then Ukraine may negotiate. But the fact that he, that comment we were taking out of context, and people will say that Rishi Sunak believes that there has to be a negotiation at, so at what point are we going to lean on the Ukrainians to negotiate? And I think that in Kiev, I think it won't be very, they won't welcome the fact that he said it. It's also, it's just not true that all wars end at the negotiating table. It's a line we've heard from the beginning, right from the start. People should read a book occasionally. The Second World War did not end in negotiation. One of yours perhaps. Yes. The First World War did not end in a meaningful negotia...

Emergency coal power used for Britain's coldest night of the year

Image
Emergency coal power used for Britain's coldest night of the year As the coldest night of the year approaches, Britain is shivering. Arctic air dropping down from the north and set to stay for days. It's putting pressure on our electricity system, the national grid, for the first time this winter, activating emergency coal units that have been standing by in case of a shortage. The challenge we often face on very cold days is getting through the short but intense period of demand as everyone gets home from work and school. That's millions of households putting the kettle on, turning the heating up and making an evening meal all at the same time. When it's windy, we usually make more than enough power to cover that, but right now it's relatively still. Imports from Europe via subsea connectors can also help, but France, a major partner, has had limited supplies beca...

Rishi Sunak to launch new bill to ending asylum seeker claims from small boat arrivals | 5 News

Rishi Sunak to launch new bill to ending asylum seeker claims from small boat arrivals | 5 News If the government gets its way, people arriving like this will not be allowed to claim asylum in future. They'll be sent to a safe country like Rwanda where the government's done a deal and they will be banned from coming here for life. The principle is those seeking asylum should only come through government sponsored schemes. Let's not forget that many people that are on these boats have traveled through a variety of safe countries to get here and we've got to ensure that we've got enough support for our people that are here in the UK. We've taken 450,000 plus people via those safe routes since 2015 but I don't think that we should be allowing the illegal routes to continue. The current system is clearly struggling. Last year more than 45,000 people crossed the...

Travel chaos as more snow and ice hit parts of the UK | 5 News The slow crawl across the M62, the snow trying everyone's patience. Some vehicles abandoned on the roadside. 14 centimetres of snow fell in parts of West Yorkshire and on the highest stretch of the motorway linking Leeds and Manchester, no one was going anywhere in a hurry. I didn't expect there to be as much snow on the road still. When I was going over Scamondon, the motorway, there was a lot more snow on the roads than I thought there was going to be. Got stuck twice. All broke free for some reason. It was great for a couple of miles and then bang again. Huge diversion through Halifax, not to be between 21 and 24. You were wise. We were wise but it's taken forever. Going through all the little roads, top moored and all that. I'm glad I didn't go on the M62. Those were the daytime woes. Overnight ...

Both leaders keen to show the world that this is a diplomatic bromance. A brief pose for the cameras, but soon alone together. If we're honest, the relationship betwee...

Why the world was wrong about Putin | Analysis

Image
Why the world was wrong about Putin | Analysis People are packing up in their cars. They're getting out of here. A few days before I found myself standing there on the edge of Kharkiv, watching those first tank shells hit into the apartment blocks in Saltyvka, my editor, Louis Emmanuel, had asked me to come up with something to be published on the day of the war, if the war began, explaining to readers why this was happening. And I was hoping it would never be published. It was, and the answer I came up with was, probably in the simple balance of power. I quote it, Russia's military is at its strongest and most capable since the Cold War. Its public finances are also in good order, and Mr Putin may believe he is well placed to bear the costs of the conflict and inevitable sanctions. We'll come back to that in a second. The West is conversely at a moment of historic econo...

Imran Khan: who is the man dividing Pakistan?

Image
Imran Khan: who is the man dividing Pakistan? The thing about Khan is that he was extremely popular. Some people think that he is finally the person who will break the military away from politics, but other people are more suspicious of Khan's motives here and say that he's trying to put himself back into power in any means possible and will let the country go up in flames. This is a very critical time for Pakistan. Got Imran Khan mobilising thousands of people on the streets against the military. The protesters here have come out to show how angry they are at the arrest of Imran Khan. The military who have seemed to have declared all out war on Khan and his party. It's a doing dire situation for our country. The take-out is coming pretty thick and fast now. We've got an economic crisis. Pakistan is now on the brink of default. Its democracy hasn't been so at ris...

Migrant crossings: 'Can you stop the small boats?'

Image
Migrant crossings: 'Can you stop the small boats?' Are you going to be able to stop the small boats? Well, that's our objective. We couldn't have been clearer in putting it as one of the five central promises of this government to stop the boats, secure our borders and bring fairness back to our asylum system. We're going to do everything in our power to achieve that, and ultimately, it will be for the public to decide at the next general election whether we've succeeded or not. But be in no doubt that the Prime Minister of the Home Section and I will do everything we can to achieve that goal. I'm just interested in listening to some of the language you're using there. It's your objective. You're going to do everything you can to achieve it, not saying, yeah, we are going to stop the small boats. We are going to stop the small boats, and we wi...
