Man Spent 22 Years on Death Row for a Crime He Didn't Commit

Image
Summary: The man was falsely accused of a crime he didn't commit and spent 22 years on death row surrounded by killers. He survived through compassion and empathy for his torturers, which enabled personal growth. Unfortunately, at the age of 20, I was falsely accused of the rape and murder of a woman I never met. So I can understand right now the feeling Andrew's going through, especially at what feels like the end of the journey. But it still goes on, and it'll n...

Prince Harry Trial: Former 'in-house hacker' appears in court First to give evidence in Prince Harry's case against Mirror Group newspapers, Harry and Meghan's biographer and a former journalist at the Sunday Mirror. Dan Evans given a suspended sentence back in 2014 after admitting illegal information gathering at the now defunct news of the world but a journalist before that at the Sunday Mirror. Hired in 2003 to work for then editor Tina Weaver. In court he said it was a badly kept secret that he was the designated in-house hacker using burner phones in her office to keep his work largely out of sight of the newsroom. MGM denies voicemail interception at any of its titles but in court Evans said he was doing it and had about a 30% success rate claiming that when he was at the paper in his words it was doing dodgy stuff on every story. When asked by MGM's legal te...

Ukraine War: What missiles have Russia fired?

Image
Ukraine War: What missiles have Russia fired? I mean, he caveated his remarks so that he wasn't departing from the official government line, which is that Ukraine makes the calls here when Ukraine's ready, then Ukraine may negotiate. But the fact that he, that comment we were taking out of context, and people will say that Rishi Sunak believes that there has to be a negotiation at, so at what point are we going to lean on the Ukrainians to negotiate? And I think that in Kiev, I think it won't be very, they won't welcome the fact that he said it. It's also, it's just not true that all wars end at the negotiating table. It's a line we've heard from the beginning, right from the start. People should read a book occasionally. The Second World War did not end in negotiation. One of yours perhaps. Yes. The First World War did not end in a meaningful negotia...

UK agrees to give France £480m to tackle small boat crossings

Image
UK agrees to give France £480m to tackle small boat crossings Rishi Sunak arriving in Paris, promising a new beginning. His predecessor couldn't say if Emmanuel Macron was a true ally. It's France's offender faux prime minister. This new prime minister in little doubt. The warmest of handshakes in the courtyard of the Elysees Palace. This is the first summit of its kind since 2018. Both leaders keen to show the world that this is a diplomatic bromance. A brief pose for the cameras, but soon alone together. The president and prime minister spent an hour in talks with no aides or officials in the room. Top of the agenda, small boats crossing the channel. In the last decade the UK has given over £250 million in funding to French authorities and they still keep coming. Rishi Sunak believes his predecessors took the wrong approach. If we're honest, the relationship betwee...

Emergency coal power used for Britain's coldest night of the year

Image
Emergency coal power used for Britain's coldest night of the year As the coldest night of the year approaches, Britain is shivering. Arctic air dropping down from the north and set to stay for days. It's putting pressure on our electricity system, the national grid, for the first time this winter, activating emergency coal units that have been standing by in case of a shortage. The challenge we often face on very cold days is getting through the short but intense period of demand as everyone gets home from work and school. That's millions of households putting the kettle on, turning the heating up and making an evening meal all at the same time. When it's windy, we usually make more than enough power to cover that, but right now it's relatively still. Imports from Europe via subsea connectors can also help, but France, a major partner, has had limited supplies beca...

Ukraine War: 'Executed' soldier video could be a war crime

Image
Ukraine War: 'Executed' soldier video could be a war crime President Zelensky has promised that Ukraine will find the Russians allegedly responsible for shooting dead an unarmed Ukrainian soldier. Footage emerged online yesterday, purportedly showing the killing and a warning that we're about to show the moments leading up to that incident. In it, an unarmed man is seen smoking a cigarette before saying, Glory to Ukraine. The man is then shot repeatedly. Sky News has been unable to independently verify the location and date of the footage. But Ukraine says the man killed is thought to be Ukrainian serviceman called Timofey Shadora, who went missing in the area around the heavily contested city of Bakhmut in early February. A video appeared today showing how the occupiers brutally killed a soldier who bravely said to their face, Glory to Ukraine. I want all of us together...

Ukraine War: Aftermath of seven-hour barrage of Russian missile strikes

Image
Ukraine War: Aftermath of seven-hour barrage of Russian missile strikes I was aware the missiles struck and it caused fire. Set this car ablaze. Pretty much this one has burnt itself out. Some of the others have gone up in flames as well. And these things have been. All these type of incidents have been going on for months and months now. There has been a bit of a lull in recent weeks. The Ukrainian military says that about, well, at least 80 rockets were fired at Ukraine. Among some cruise missiles, 34, the air force say, were taken out. Now, some of these incidents are actually because of the air defence systems. They actually either hit the rocket, perhaps it doesn't explode, or their own rockets come down to earth. Quite a lot of people, at least six people, have died in this incident. They say it's across all of the country. And that is what the Russians are trying to d...

Wayne Couzens joked about sexual assault in newly released WhatsApp messages

Image
Wayne Couzens joked about sexual assault in newly released WhatsApp messages Kidnapper, rapist, murderer. Now we can add flasher to the list of Wayne Cousins' crimes. Already, he will never leave prison, but today he was sentenced to yet more time. For the offence against A, count 2 on indictment number T20206038. The sentence is one of 19 months imprisonment. The court was played CCTV footage of Cousins' car after one incident. His number plate clearly visible. Information that police had for three days before he killed Sarah Everard. The fact that no police came to find him or his black car to question him about these incidents can only have served to confirm and strengthen in the defendant's mind a dangerous belief in his invincibility. Could police have stopped him? An independent inquiry will seek to answer such questions. Now that Wayne Cousins' legal proceedin...

Ukraine War: 'Putin is feeling more and more isolated'

Image
Ukraine War: 'Putin is feeling more and more isolated' Well, Ukrainians are not losing it, and with the support they've had from the West, they will not lose it. The question is, can the Ukrainians win? The Russians are not going to win, but can the Ukrainians win? And if so, when? And of course, I think we all recognise, and particularly having listened to recently to President Zelensky, that until they get all the weaponry that they're asking for, main battle tanks, self-propelled artillery and the like, they won't be able to mount a proper counter-offensive and crack the Russians. So, long answer, I'm afraid, Kate, to a short question. Ukrainians will not lose this. The Russians cannot win it. What we have to do is help the Ukrainians to win on the battlefield. But we bring other pieces into this chess game, don't we? We bring in China, we bring in Belar...

Ukraine War: Is the defence of Bakhmut a distraction?

Image
Ukraine War: Is the defence of Bakhmut a distraction? I'm joined now by the former senior military intelligence officer, Philip Ingram. Good to see you again, Philip. Now, of course, Russian forces have made some advances in recent days in Bakhmut, but on the whole, there's been very little movement on the front line in recent weeks and months. Why is that? Yeah, well, exactly. Day 374 of Vladimir Putin's 10-day Special Military Operation. And the Russians, we keep talking about this spring offensive. They're probing the front lines in different places. Bakhmut will more detail that in a moment, but further north, up around Kramina and in the south, around Donetsk, they're trying to see where their weakness is in the Ukrainian defences. And they're not really finding any. The things that are influencing at the moment, the weather, the ground is softening up. ...

'I turned off Netflix and went to fight': The Scot who went to war in Ukraine

Image
'I turned off Netflix and went to fight': The Scot who went to war in Ukraine As a mother, it was very, very tough. A nightmare. He wanted to go and help, and I totally got all that. But I didn't like this feeling. And I didn't expect it to still be so. raw. Feeling so raw after it. They thought their boy might not return home from the front line in Ukraine. But Douglas did make it back to the family farm in South West Scotland. The helicopters are the worst. And you'll hear the. By this point you're crawling up the wall going, not today, please not today. He had no military training, but still decided he had to go. I was sat here actually drinking a beer, watching Netflix. I made my decision, packed up the stuff and left my job an awful lot. I'm young enough, I can contribute to a better world. He was known as Soap, a video game character, who was now ...

Nigeria Election: Crowds chant 'let us vote'

Image
Nigeria Election: Crowds chant 'let us vote' It's finally here. Nigeria's much-awaited election. People are gathering to cast their vote, but the polling stations are late. This one in Lagos opened just in time for former state governor and presidential candidate Bola Ahmadtinobu to cast his vote. He's up against two other front-runners, former vice president and people-democratic party candidate Attiku Abu Bakr and a wild card, 61-year-old former banker Peter Obi, who has been galvanizing the country's youth. Whoever does win has a mammoth task ahead. Mr. How do you expect to solve the country's economic crisis? Will we definitely be a transformative government? Will we walk hard to change the economic crisis? It's not the only thing that we have as a challenge. Nigeria is also dealing with a widespread security crisis as well as endemic corruption a...

Food Shortage: Farmers 'can't bear' extra costs

Image
Food Shortage: Farmers 'can't bear' extra costs Depleted by drought, last summer's heat waves are still biting, this time into food supplies. Having much less water in the bank at this time of year means that we have had to reduce our irrigated cropping area by 25 per cent for this next growing season. Andrews scaled back his vegetable crops, with other farmers doing the same amid warnings of more shortages to come. The cost of production has increased almost exponentially, which is a massive challenge. Many businesses just can't bear that extra cost and they just can't take that risk. So we're really calling on the retailers to pay at least what it costs to produce, plus some form of margin to make it more sustainable and to encourage us to continue to produce food in the UK. Severe weather overseas is already disrupting supplies. Supermarkets are ration...
