Olivia Pratt-Korbel screamed 'Mum, I'm scared' before she was shot, a court has heard | 5 News
Let's bring you another one of today's main stories. And the mother of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Cawbell said her daughter screamed, Mum, I'm scared, just seconds before she was shot dead. The court heard that today. Well, Olivia was killed last summer. You probably remember when a gunman forced his way into her home. Thomas Cashman stands accused of her murder, which he denies. Peter Lane has been following the case at Manchester Crown Court.
We can go to him now. Good evening to you, Peter. You've been there all day. How has that case been presented to the jury? Your high-seer, well, the jury actually heard some of the gunshots from that night. They saw what the prosecution claim is footage of Thomas Cashman shooting his alleged intended target in the street before his plan went, as they put it, horribly wrong. Now, he denies murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent and firearms charges. And I should warn you, you might find some of the details in my report distressing.
RUNNING Arriving for the start of his trial, Thomas Cashman, accused by the prosecution of setting out in what they called the ruthless pursuit of a target in a shooting that went wrong and ultimately claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl. Olivia Pratt-Corbell was killed last August at her home in Liverpool. The judge telling the jury they would feel shock and upset at the death of a child, but must put their emotions to one side. The alleged target that night had been a man called Joseph Nee. The prosecution claim he was shot in the street near Olivia's home by Thomas Cashman and ran, injured, towards the house when he saw the front door open, still pursued by his attacker. Olivia's mum, Cheryl, had opened the door after hearing loud bangs as she tried to close it again a shot went through the door, through her hand, and into Olivia's chest. The court heard some of her account of what happened.
She said, I was just screaming, screaming to go away, and then I heard the gunshot and realised, because I felt it, it hit my hand. The jury here was told that just before that shot, Olivia ran down the stairs towards the front door, screaming, mum, I'm scared. When Cheryl turned around to see where her daughter was, she screamed, Olivia's been hit, and was heard saying, stay with me, baby. On the phone to the ambulance, she asked, where are they? She's dying, and she described looking at Olivia. Cheryl had said, she went all floppy, and her eyes went to the back of her head, and I realised she must have been hit, because I didn't know until then, and I lifted up her top, and the bullet had got her right in the middle of the chest. The jury was told Thomas Cashman denies being the gunman, and that this case is about a pursuit that happened with no consideration for anyone else, ending with Joseph Knee and Cheryl Corbell injured, and most tragically, with Olivia Pratt Corbell being killed.
