Two teenagers have lost their lives within hours of each other after attending a DJ set in Glasgow on Saturday. Both 18-year-old men died in hospital after taking unwell following the event. Police are now investigating whether the deaths at Music Fendu SWG3 in the York Hill area are linked and whether drugs may have been involved.
Well the details around exactly what happened at SWG3, which is just at the end of this street behind me, are still emerging. But we do know though, is that both men had been at a set by DJ Ben Hemsley here on Saturday. That event finished around 10 o'clock and there was then an after party which went on until the next morning. The first man took unwell at Croy railway station in North Lanarkshire late on Saturday night but he passed away shortly after.
Then, in the early hours of Sunday, the second man fell ill here. He also died in hospital. And police are trying to find out whether drugs could have played a part. Yes, they say one of the scenarios they're looking into is whether a substance was involved and also whether these two incidents are linked. Now we've been speaking to a drugs charity which has stressed there's no evidence yet to confirm that's the case but it does say in general over the last decade drug purity has been increasing which carries with it a higher risk of overdose. The unregulated drug market is dynamic and there is an increase in the presence of synthetic stimulant drugs called cathinones on the market currently. Drugs can be sold without us knowing what's actually in them.
They could be much higher purity than we expect. So while the drugs market is illegal, there's no accountability, there's no regulation. We really need to think seriously about regulating drugs. Well, in the meantime, a spokesperson for SWG3 says they're absolutely devastated by this news and that they'll continue to assist police with their inquiries.
