There's been widespread outrage across India after horrific footage has emerged showing two women being sexually assaulted and paraded naked by a mob in the state of Manipur. It follows a months-long, deadly ethnic conflict between two tribes, the Hindu majority-Mathij tribe and the Christian minority-Cookie tribe.

They're not militant groups, these are not terrorists, these are not organized groups. These are local people, people of one ethnicity fighting against the other ethnicity, and where the state seems to have been divided on ethnic lines. The state police, whether it's Amitay or a Cookie, they're divided. So the fact that everyone is divided and everyone is fighting each other actually makes it as close to civil war as it could be. The first ethnic clashes first broke out in May, leaving 140 people dead and displacing more than 60,000 others. The disturbing footage, which has since gone viral, shows the mob force the women to strip and drag them into a field before one of them is allegedly gang-raped. In the horrific scenes, the women can be heard weeping and begging their attackers to show mercy. Despite the incident having been reported to police on May 4th when it occurred, the first arrests weren't made until two months later after outrage erupted across India on Thursday. It's led to Prime Minister Narinjha Modi finally breaking his months-long silence, saying that the incident has shamed India and that the guilty will not be spared.

The incident has sparked national and international condemnation, putting a spotlight on the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur and the urgent need for justice and protection of women's rights. Authorities are under immense pressure to bring the perpetrators to justice and address the root causes of the conflict to prevent further violence.
