The Kerch Bridge, a 12-mile-long structure, was commissioned by Russia and completed in record time, connecting Crimea to Russia. It comprises a four-lane road bridge and a two-lane rail bridge. The recent attack appears to have targeted the road element, causing extensive damage. This bridge serves as a vital supply line for Russian forces operating in southern Ukraine, ensuring logistics and resupply of ammunition, food, and other necessities.

The attack carries significant symbolism, as President Putin takes immense pride in the bridge, considering any damage to it as an attack on himself. Moreover, it sends a strong message to both Crimea's residents and Russian travelers, disrupting their travel and bringing the war closer to their doorstep.

Though early reports suggested Western involvement, it is now believed that the damage was caused from below, possibly by seaborn drones. Responsibility for the attack remains unclaimed, leaving uncertainty about its origin and motives.


As tensions rise in the region, the incident also coincides with the expiration of a grain deal between Russia and Ukraine. The deal, aimed at supplying grain to feed the world's poorest, has faced complications, affecting African countries the most. Putin's alliances in Africa may be impacted by the ongoing situation, leading to speculation about the attack's underlying intentions.
