Donald Trump brands E. Jean Carroll a 'nut job' following trial verdict | Dr Thomas Gift reacts
And Thomas Trump does seem to be the gift that keeps on giving in terms of political analysis. Absolutely. And you know, in terms of the politics, Trump did, I think last night, exactly what he wanted to do. He's in the midst of a Republican primary. He wants to play to his base. And so that's what he did. He threw red meat to them on January 6th on allegations of a stolen election, even called the moderator, Caitlin Collins, a nasty person on stage.
And you could see from the reactions of the crowd, which was Republican primary voters, his supporters were really lapping it up. So yeah, I mean, Trump is certainly the gift that keeps on giving for political commentary. And maybe there are some at CNN just wondering whether they did the right thing in the right place at the right time. But clearly, obviously, this is the Trump approach to double down and to maybe try and inflame some would say his own supporters. But we do have, you know, senior Republicans such as this senator in Texas saying, well, this may play well with his base, but what's going to happen when we get into the presidential race with a wider electorate, particularly, you know, the floating voters such as the so-called soccer mums? Right. I mean, that's always the big question with Donald Trump, which is, you know, he has this core of support among the Republican base. But how does that translate into a general election? And of course, in 2020, he wasn't able to get a broad enough appeal to actually win that election.
But if, you know, for Donald Trump right now, I think he's focused on first things first, get through the Republican primary. And man, his poll numbers have really been going through the roof of late. A number of different challenges like Ron DeSantis have really fallen over the last few weeks. And you have to say at this point, Donald Trump is the prohibitive favorite. As you said, he really is taking this strategy of kind of double down on galvanizing his supporters. What's happened to DeSantis? We didn't even hear him coming out to react to this Jewish decision in New York. And seemingly, you know, he's, as you say, falling further and further back in terms of the Republican polling.
Well, I think Ron DeSantis is in a really difficult spot right now. Of course, he hasn't even officially launched his campaign, although he's indicated that he's planning to do so within the next month or so. But he's in this kind of purgatory in which he can't really come out and attack Donald Trump as hard as he likes, because that would alienate the base. But at the same time, you know, just kind of stepping back and not saying anything also seems to not be a very helpful strategy. And so I think the combination of that and also some of his focus on Florida woke culture wars and these sorts of things, which are not necessarily making the news like it was months ago, that combination of factors has led to him declining the polls. We're talking and making the news and in terms of political balance, let's talk about the Democrats and Joe Biden. I mean, we've got this extraordinary claim or quote at this Democratic Party event in New York yesterday, saying that he'd visited Ireland to ensure the Brits didn't screw around, of course, the four day trip reflecting his Irish roots.
But in terms of political approach, perhaps it might raise a few high brides. It might, although I have to say, I'm not sure if this is as big of an issue here in the UK as it is in the United States. And so just in terms of the domestic politics as Joe Biden faces, you know, no primary challenger and then is heading into the general election, I just doubt that this is going to be a big issue. Has it really made headlines or been sort of the focus of news in the United States? But, you know, still it's certainly an issue, of course, over here in the UK as well.
