Harry and Meghan are ‘concerned’ about attending King Charles’ coronation
There is no sign of any kind of reconciliation at the moment. And there is certainly no sign now that Harry is going to get that apology that he is so desperate for. Now, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are apparently an email correspondence with the King's Office about whether they're going to attend the coronation. It's not clear if they're going to come. Sarah Husson is TalkTV's Royal Editor who joins us this morning. Hi, Sarah. Morning to you, Rosie.
So there had been a little bit of speculation as to whether they'd be even be invited at all. It seems as though they have been asked to save the date. Yes, we've got news from the Sussex camp this weekend that there has been email correspondence regarding the coronation, whether that's an official invitation or logistics around it, trying to work out whether or not they're going to come. That has been sent, but the Sussexes are not going to disclose their decision in the immediate future. Now, we are two months today, Rosie, from the coronation. And you just talked about one debate rumbling on. This is another one that is going to rumble on.
It is reminiscent of the Platinum Jubilee when we were questioning then whether Harry and Meghan would attend. And I think the same here because there's a dilemma at stake for them. Do they come when they've made it very clear that they want to have an apology from the royal family before they attend? They are also concerned about the kind of reaction they might get from the public here in the UK with their popularity ratings plummeting following the Netflix documentary series and the publication of Harry's book, Spare. But if they don't come, so much of Bran's Sussex is associated with their relationship with the royal family. They're royal connections. What does that look like for them? And what does that do to the brand in the long term? So a lot of decision making to come and also a lot of logistics to be put in place by the palace in order that this row doesn't overshadow at the King's Big Day. So you sort of hinted there at the different things they'll be weighing up on deciding whether to come.
The thing that surprised me, Sarah, is that you sort of it feels like with an event as significant as this, the invitations would already sort of been long sent. No, indeed, there's been the guest list over the past few weeks has been finalised. But but when you hear that there's an email been sent, I kind of imagined a very, you know, fat, thick envelope would be arriving on the doorstep. Not so at the moment in the case of the Sussexes. Now, they are, of course, family and there's an awful lot to discuss before that, not least of all, where they're going to stay when they come over here after King Charles has served Harry and Meghan with their eviction orders from Frogmore Cottage. But it is now reported that they're going to be allowed to keep Frogmore for the next couple of months, certainly beyond the coronation and through the summer. And so they would still have a base here in the UK, should they decide to come.
Who actually decides the guest list? Well, that is decided between the palace, the King, obviously, and the foreign office and Downing Street. This is such a significant state occasion as well. When the Queen's coronation took place, there were 8000 people on the guest list. We know this one is much, much smaller. 2000 people who will be packed into Westminster Abbey for the coronation. And so trying to get the right 2000 people is something of a headache because the King wants this to be a more modern, forward-looking coronation while also respecting the traditions of the past. So anyone who's drawn up, I don't know, a wedding guest list or anything, we'll know that's one of their biggest challenges.
Just imagine trying to pull this one together. Yes, you want sort of family politics to be laid to rest. How likely is it that we'll see a sort of harmonious next couple of months until the ceremony? I think that might be wishful thinking on your part there, Rosie. It would be nice to think so, wouldn't it? And certainly we know that the King had asked William and Harry not to blight his last few years with this fighting between the brothers. But there is no sign of any kind of reconciliation at the moment. And there is certainly no sign now that Harry is going to get that apology that he is so desperate for. Could there be any discussions if he does come over to the UK for the coronation? Well, look, after he depicted in the book, Spare, about the clashes that took place at Frogmore after Prince Philip's funeral, I think they'll be very wary.
The Royal Family will be very wary about having any conversations and whether they might end up in the pages of another book or another documentary series. There is a real issue of trust here. And I think that is a big factor in whether or not conversations can be taking place behind the scenes. Sarah, thank you very much for sort of talking us through just some of the dynamics at play with that guest list and whether Harry and Meghan will say RSVP. Yes, Sarah Houston, Talk TV's Royal Editor. It's been brilliant to have you on the programme.
